We recently connected with Ruslan Kogan of Kogan Technologies, and are working together on their new Netbook launch. Ruslan is a hardcore technologist and entrepreneur, and runs the biggest online retail electronics site in Australia.

Good OS just moved its more current updates to Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/goodos. Simple, right?

I'll continue to update this blog at the more important junctures of our company and products, which just so happens to be when there's a chance I'll have more than 140 characters of content to talk about.

Therefore, nothing has changed about this blog, and on top of nothing you'll get to have relatively more current status updates from our Twitter. So hurry up and follow us, we'll follow you too :-)

Good article about living in the offline world

A couple days ago, I read a really good article about our recent announcement of Cloud: "Is this the Cloud You Really Wanted?" by Sarah Perez of ReadWriteWeb / Microsoft's Channel 10 Blog.

Sarah brought up a great point about the main drawback of Cloud being that we live in an offline world and also mentioning that technologies such as Google Gears and Adobe AIR are not totally mature in practice just yet (although we think it might be a matter of time, albeit a long time if ever).

Cloud addresses the offline world in 2 ways:

1) Bundling Windows PCs with Cloud. Windows is a reality for most people and their computer needs, and that the value of Cloud and of Windows is different and complementary. I have to admit, there are times I need my Adobe Photoshop to design something, or Apple iTunes to connect to my amazing iPod Touch, or open up Microsoft Office to view documents and presentations from other companies, so I can understand why people need Windows. Of course I use a Mac when I have to use applications, but regardless the need for offline and rich client applications is obvious!

2) Supporting Rich Client Applications. So Cloud supports offline applications as well, such as Office and NotePad like applications in terms of pure capability. In terms of design choice, however, we're happy to focus on the online world (after all, it's called Cloud) and leave the offline world to Windows. Sticking to what we're good at, and doing one thing well is important after all :-)

gOS & Cloud: What's the difference?

When we first started the company, we had a single product: gOS. Last week, we introduced our second product called "Cloud."

I noticed that a few articles reviewing Cloud used screenshots of gOS, and might have assumed that gOS and Cloud were the same operating system, when in fact they are different operating systems. So what's the difference?

gOS boots a full desktop with full suite of rich client applications, such as Firefox, OpenOffice, Media Player, etc. The user sees a desktop and uses it as a desktop. When buying a computer, you could buy a computer with just gOS installed as the only operating system.

Cloud boots into a browser environment that's designed for faster access to web applications, such as Google Calendar, Documents, etc. The user sees a browser and uses it as a browser, with extra features that most browsers don't have such as "Powering Off" or "Switching to Windows." When buying a computer, you could buy a computer with Cloud and Windows installed together.

It's been an exciting few days after the early look at Cloud and announcement of Cloud with Gigabyte Netbooks at the Netbook World Summit in Paris, France.

We feel very thankful and excited to receive the interest of Engadget, Gizmodo, CNET, Washington Post, Laptop Mag, DownloadSquad, eeepcnews.de, SlashDot, etc., etc, etc....

While many articles are still focusing on boot time, in the next month hope to see some articles talk about our primary emphasis as a Cloud operating system and its relevance for PC makers & users.

P.S. There is currently no public version of Cloud and we'll mention more about availability around CES time.

From Netbook World Summit... back to Taipei.

Just arrived back in Taipei from the Paris, France where I attended the Netbook World Summit conference. Currently blogging from a meeting. Shh, don't tell anyone.

Netbook World Summit
I think this was the first conference dedicated to Netbooks. Heard presentations from hardware makers like ASUS, MSI, Lenovo, Samsung, etc. And a few software developers presented too, like Mozilla, Xandros, and ourselves. Also checked out Phoenix's HyperSpace solution for the second time. Very cool. Check out www.netbookworldsummit.org for more info.

Intel Developer Forum in Taipei, Taiwan

Hello, I just want to say thanks to Peter Kronowitt of Intel for inviting me to speak at the Moblin Open Mic session at the Intel Developer Forum in Taipei, Taiwan.

At the event, we announced our support of Moblin as well as our new design win and OEM partner MiTAC International who we are working with on the Linux version of their NetBook product.

At the session, it was nice to see friends from Novell, Canonical, Xandros, etc. all there. And nice to meet new Intel friends as well. Walking around I saw friends from different hardware and software companies and it was all very nice to see them :-)

The above is an article from The Register that I just read today that surprised me because it sounded like the thoughts that are inside my head 24/7 when I'm working with our team on growing the gOS both as a company and community.

Over the past 9 months since we debuted at Wal-Mart, we've been fortunate and feel grateful to have received a lot of coverage about what we are doing.

P.S. This month I also want to appreciate Kevin and Joby who are new members of our team and family. They've helped us develop our brand new, very helpful user community (Visit its Google Group) and beautiful website which was ranked 5th in the Top 10 Linux distribution websites in a highly Dugg article :-)

Along with that we've made some updates to our website!

It's just an early start, but thanks to our community we'll be improving the user experience in the next 1-2 months towards a final release.

Would like to especially thank James Su and Dan Kegel for their contribution to the open source community and also for their advice and help on including their projects in gOS. James is the developer of Google Gadgets for Linux, Google Desktop for Linux, and previously wrote SCIM which broke many language barriers for the Linux desktop. Dan has been a WINE developer for many years, and has helped us run killer apps like Google Picasa for Linux, Adobe Photoshop CS2, and others on gOS and any other Linux. Also many thanks to their teams and communities as well. Check out Google Gadgets for Linux and WINE 1.0.

We hope a lot of developers and end users interested in developing a "Linux for the rest of us" will join us for testing and feedback.
