gOS 3 Gadgets BETA is released!

Learn more about gOS 3 Gadgets BETA.

Join the Google Group to discuss gOS 3 Gadgets BETA.

Along with that we've made some updates to our website!

It's just an early start, but thanks to our community we'll be improving the user experience in the next 1-2 months towards a final release.

Would like to especially thank James Su and Dan Kegel for their contribution to the open source community and also for their advice and help on including their projects in gOS. James is the developer of Google Gadgets for Linux, Google Desktop for Linux, and previously wrote SCIM which broke many language barriers for the Linux desktop. Dan has been a WINE developer for many years, and has helped us run killer apps like Google Picasa for Linux, Adobe Photoshop CS2, and others on gOS and any other Linux. Also many thanks to their teams and communities as well. Check out Google Gadgets for Linux and WINE 1.0.

We hope a lot of developers and end users interested in developing a "Linux for the rest of us" will join us for testing and feedback.

Thanks everyone for your support!

Dave

What happened to gOS Rocket? Are you giving up on Enlightenment?

Jay Wilson said...

Have you abandoned gOS Spaces?

Same question here - does the Gadget Version replace all others?

What about x64 version of gOS?
Have you planned such releases?

Anonymous said...

The new beta is very good but it is different than the screen shots. But seriously what happened to gOS Space?

Fred said...

Is gOS 3.0 still based on Ubuntu 7.10 like gOS 2.9 was, or has it changed?

Anonymous said...

The new desktop looks very nice. If it's got webcam support, then it's ready to conquer.

@fred: ever think to check the website? "gOS 3 Gadgets is based on the solid Linux distribution base of Ubuntu 8.04.1." - http://thinkgos.com/new/gos.php

my question is why the instructions specify to burn a 687MB iso to a DVD? thatd be a bit of a waste..

Joby Kent said...

sorry for the DVD instructions! I'll fix that now.

Joby Kent said...

I've fixed the DVD instructions on our website. Thanks for letting us know

Ruud Kuin said...

where is the md5-sum to be found?
Please place it in the downloadzone...
It's always good to check this before burning!

Mirror one just hangs when I try to download the new beta version.

Mirror two just redirects to http://www.thinkgos.com/new/.

Help! I really want to try this out!

This release looks really nice, just the thing to give to your friends when their Vista/XP machines break. Just one question why have you removed the Advent dock and replaced it with the idock? The Advent dock is so much better and really sets this distro apart! It's good to see this distro moving forward.

I wanted to say i like your new website!
It looks lots better than the old one!

Thanks for the feedback! We are not giving up on gOS Space. We will continue to provide that for download for special use of MySpace and other entertainment related PCs.

Look for the download shortly!

Anonymous said...

Thank you for adding a mirror. That one is working (albeit slowly). I tried the link (now the third one listed) listed as http://www.thinkgos.com/gOS3-Download/gos-base-8041-20080805b.isoand it starts to download a 49.2 mb file. I assume that one is not going to work.

Alex Afinarul said...

I will also try the newest version of gOS. With the earlier ones I could not connect to the Internet provided by RDS in Romania because the network manager of the distributions older than Hardy Heron 8.04 do not have the option for that kind of PPPoE connection. I am an Ubuntu Hardy Heron user. With the newest gOS I will surely be able to connect to the Internet. Otherwise everything worked OK

Alex Afinarul said...

I have the other versions of gOS and I will publish the CD images on the Internet. gOS Rocket and gOS Spaces are fine.

Ruud Kuin said...

Uhm, am I the only one interested in the md5-sum?
Please publish it on the download area...

Hey guys, The 3rd mirror will be fixed shortly, We're uploading the iso to our server as something was mis-placed for the new launch. Give it a few hours.

Have downloaded gOS Gadget twice on two different machines from two different mirrors and have yet to get the whole 600+ MB it states it's composed of. One was 318MB and the other 366MB. One took 1 hour 53 minutes to download the other 2hrs 18 mins. I have a 3gig processor 2gig ram and a fast 6gig DSL and still can't get the complete program. Is there a problem and I seem to be the only one that has it. I have all 4 versions of gOS with v1.1 on an old Toshiba laptop with 128meg of ram and a 10 gig hard drive. Runs well as does the Rockets and Space. What's up with "Gadgets"?

Well at 68.6MB downloading from mirror "Welcome to pAsM-Mirrors.com" the damn thing said "Download Complete"! Tried the others and I've already posted what happened there. I'll wait for the "Final" distro and just be happy, -not satisfied- with what I have. Maybe before long we'll be as big as google and have a darn good download (mirror)site. Thanks for gOS. Soon and very soon it gonna be the "ONE".

I d/l'ed the full image and was able to boot of the CD on an eeepc 2G surf. Everything but the wireless was working ok, so I figured I would go ahead and install it to the built-in 2 gig SSD. It is telling me there is not enough space (I believe I am just shy of the required space). Why is that? Why can everything run off of the CD (which is 700 Megs) but the install requires 2 gigs? And any info on Wireless Drivers?

Joby Kent said...

@willc0de4food

Your Distro should be fine ;) It was really 3rd mirror (Or trying to) that we were uploading to. As you may have noticed, we're having some problems at the moment with our download mirrors. We should have stuff stable within 24 hours.

willc0de4food said...

@anonymous: everything on the CD is in a compressed form, everything installed is not. compressed size is less, but takes longer to boot as it has to decompress everything its going to use.

Anonymous said...

@willc0de4food

Thanks for the info! I had a feeling something like that was the case. It's frustrating that I am just shy of the required disc space. I can install to my 4 gig SD Card, but of course I'd rather have a "Minimum Install" option so that I could use my internal 2 gigs for the OS and then the SD Card for all other data. One can wish, right? :)

Any chance we could get a gOS 3.0 distribution with the Space interface but without the MySpace integration? I love the look of Space, but I don't want all that MySpace junk cluttering up my interface.

I installed gOS 3 and I'm really enjoying it.

One issue: Maybe I did something wrong, but when I installed it, it asked where I wanted to put the bootloader. I told it to put it in the second partition (I'm dualbooting XP) and it still over-wrote my MBR, making XP unbootable until I restored the bootloader from the XP cd. Is there a way to install the bootloader without having the installer overwrite the MBR? I can deal with getting to the partition and adding it to the XP bootloader myself.

Is there any way to install this from a USB Flash Drive? I've been trying for hours to install this to my eeepc's 4 gig SD Card and it's just not working. I get to like 24 or 25% and then it just hangs. I've formated the card several times as well. It's possible my USB external DVD drive is crashing it, so that's why I was hoping to try it from a USB Flash Drive. Many thanks!

How do you a-holes ever expect to get any user support for something you cannot even provide reliable mirrors, links, or even a torrent for download? This is the WORST run site for a distro EVER! Clean it up or pack it up.

@joel: yes, grub has the option to install to a partition instead of to the MBR, but why? you could boot XP from grub.
to install to the partition, you'd need to know which partition you installed linux on, for example /dev/sda2. then you'd execute: grub-install /dev/sda2
to add Windows XP to grub, the entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst would be (assuming windows is installed on /dev/sda1, and this hard drive is hd0):
title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

When the final release comes out, rest assured we will be better!

Nice work. Very fast.... However all the desktop stuff on the live cd gets crowded over to the right. How do I move items where I want? This is not Gnome, right, LXDE?

It would be good to see some system requirements for gOS. I ran the beta from the CD on a 10-year old 166 MHz Pentium system with 256 Mb of memory, it ran pretty good.

Anonymous said...

Also, will future versions of gOS include the Google Gadgets by default?

Anonymous said...

gOS either needs to add more mirrors, or obtain better ones. The site in Germany has been down since Friday August 8 and the other two mirrors are displaying such slow download speeds (showing anywhere from 2 to 9 HOURS (on a 6 Mb connection!) to download), that it isn't worth it.

willc0de4food said...

you're going to QQ about 2 hours?
HAH..it's not like the invention of a graphical user interface has prevented us from multi-tasking, nor are you using the phone line so people can't call you..

Hi David,

Wondering did you get the drivers from linux.via.com.tw working?

I bought a cloudbook when they first released an have been dismayed with being an ignored patron both here and with everex.

Generally I'm pretty patient, but currently the cloudbook is worthless, I've spent many hours trying to get it working something close to correctly, but with the current "cloudbook owners don't matter" vibe I'm getting, its very hard to continue being supportive or understanding.

Sorry if I sound harsh, but I spend several hundred dollars on the thing, and still cant use it for anything other than a paperweight.

It's great I can read this ...

when is an official release?

Bruce said...

Downloaded via torrent over night - no problems.

It would be nice if the live CD use dhcp so an internet connection was availble. I had to add to /etc/interfaces:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

and restart networking "/etc/init.d/networking restart" to get an internet connection from the live CD.

Rob said...

@willc0de4food and anonymous

Thanks both of you, the link didn't truncate and works fine, am downloading it now.

willc0de4food(great handle) My 2 issues left on this laptop are:

1) Direct Rendering Support
I have been able to install the official via drivers, and indeed get direct rendering and get smooth video playback, and even compiz going, but my screen has a purple hue and flickers when I do this.

2) Wifi range is very limited
I do think I can fix that though, I took the little bugger apart to replace the hard drive and put in a 1gb stick of ram, while in there I saw the wifi arrangement and deduced that it either A needs an antenna, or B should be removed and just use an external usb style. Indeed the unit in this machine is nothing more than an external usb wifi device that never had its plastic shell put on, and then is buried inside the computer, am guessing with shields, motherboard, and all the other stuff that makes a laptop go, that there is just to much interference for a decent signal. Anyway, likely going to require a hardware hack, doubtful software can fix that.

Will gOS 3 Gadgets BETA work on my new Everex Cloudbook? If not, is there a mini-version in the works for future release for those of us who are Cloudbook and Sylvania micro computer users? I currently run gOS 2.0 on my Cloudbook, but the gOS 3 looks a lot better. Upgrade instructions would be most helpful.

A DC Mason said...

Will gOS 3 work on my new Everex Cloudbook? If not, is a version suited for Micro Laptops in the works that will replace the current OS on them? Please provide us an update, I'm running the older gOS 2.0 OS that came with my Everex Cloudbook, and I'm sure that since Sylvania is also running gOS on it's micro-laptops, that it would help your base to support both machines with a new updated version of gOS 3 for mini-systems.

@willc0de4food:

The problem is that I don't like grub, and I wanted to use the XP bootloader instead. Grub is just so... linuxy. I just prefer the XP bootloader to come up when I start my computer. My problem was that I told the installer to put grub on my second partition, which it did, but then it went and overwrote the MBR to point to grub. Since the XP bootloader was previously stored in the MBR, XP became unbootable, since using grub to go to XP just pointed back to grub. I eventually just restored the MBR from the XP cd and extracted grub to a file using dd so that XP's bootloader could find it.

Alfred the Ordinary said...

I'm impressed - (downloaded from linuxtracker.org.) It seems less quirky than gOS Rocket, IMO. Apart from some problems with the partition manager (it doesn't like lots of drives), this has to be the easiest install ever. No fiddling with XORG because I have an old LCD monitor - it just installed. Wonderful

Ruud Kuin said... "Uhm, am I the only one interested in the md5-sum?" Maybe. My burner recognised one from somewhere and carried out a check before burning.

David Liu said... "Hey guys, the harsh criticism is welcome."

Disagree. When someone prentends to produce the perfect OS, then harsh criticism is to be expected, but no one has produced that as yet.

Bruce said... "It would be nice if the live CD use dhcp so an internet connection was availble. I had to add to /etc/interfaces:"

Mine did and picked up the internet using DHCP. Maybe there was another issue with your setup?

Joel said... "My problem was that I told the installer to put grub on my second partition,"

If I remember correctly, XP doesn't like booting from the second disk thru grub. There is a workaround but its a long time since I used it. A google search should find it.

Shouldn't all this be in a forum somewhere rather than on blogger?

Actually the g Netbook (Sylvania) is running something called 'Escape Pod' and not Gadgets.
I have one of the Sylvania g Netbooks (which I updated with a faster 60GB hard drive and 802.11n internal WiFi) and installed gOS 3 Gadgets on it.
The only issue I have is the scaling via driver no longer works (which means no scaling video).
However this is an issue with all the Ubuntu kernels above the -16 versions and not gOS specific.
I am going to downlevel the kernel and hope the video scaling returns (I miss running in 1200x720).
Otherwise great edition of gOS guys.

From the tablet... said...

One other thing about running the gOS that comes with the Sylvania.
The headphone jack does not work with the standard gOS (or Ubuntu) install.
The fix is easy enough.
1 - Download the alsa sources
2 - open the hda_codec.c file in an editor
3 - find the line that reads like this;
(get_defcfg_connect(def_conf)==AC_JACK_PORT_NONE)
4 - change to;
if (get_defcfg_connect(def_conf)==AC_JACK_PORT_NONE && nid!=0x20)
5 - compile the drivers and install them
6 - reboot and change the volume levels in the mixer app (you will now see a slider for headphones)
You can do most of the above (except the editing of hda_codec.c )with module-assistant which makes it easier.
This fix works for most via based laptops (everex, zonbu, cloudbook and g netbook).

Yes, it is Gnome, not LXDE. Click on gOS > System Preferences > System Monitor and select the Processes tab. You will see a lot of Gnome processes running but not a single LXDE process.

You may as well launch Nautilus by clicking on gOS > Places > Computer and browse to /usr/share/xsessions to see that there is Gnome there but no LXDE.

What if I want to try gOS on a VMware virtual machine?

Eric said...

Rob,

Maybe I can be of help to you with your Cloudbook.

Try visiting http://www.everex.com/support/downloads/downloads.htm#ce1200v
there is an ISO file that you can download, burn to a DVD, and then through the use of a external DVD-ROM, you can set your Cloudbook to boot to this device, and it will restore your Cloudbook back to the original system as if it were brand new. I did this a few weeks back and it works great!

Give it a try and I hope this helps you get more use out of your Cloudbook, than just a paperweight. I'm not sure if this gOS 3 Gadgets works on Cloudbook, but if it does, that would be great too, but I'm not if I want to mess with my Cloudbook and have to do a restore again.

David Liu

I'm at a loss at this point and continue to feel ripped off by everex. I had hoped that either everex or gos or both would have stepped up and taken care of the folks that supported them by buying their products, I guess that is a pointless wish.
I am very dissatisfied with gos at this point, not because I have to be, but because I and the entire cloudbook community have been ignored. I posted in the gos forum, such as it is, and waited patiently. My wife Jen emailed David, received promising response, I have exchanged email with Kim from everex and also received promises, I exchanged email with someone from VIA(forget name atm) and did eventually see drivers materialize, only to be told in email that VIA would only support CRT monitors(what? in 2008? seriously?), and still the issue goes on unresolved, and undocumented by either entity.
So now here we are, I allowed my hopes to be brought up again, only to still be stuck at the verge of the stupid cloudbook working as promised, and a lack of interest by gOS and Everex(who is still selling it) and now being sold by Sylvania as well(again with gOS on it). David Liu this is my last attempt at whining and crying for your support. If you can't help us out with the cloudbook, then I wash my hands of gOS entirely. So far I have been as patient as I can be, but really you need to drop the hammer, either support your patrons or not, and let us know which way your going to go with it in a way that is official, and not ambiguous.

Sincerely,
Rob Cannon

My cloudbook went to memtest roop when I tried to updated to Ubuntu 8.04.
After checking several website, I decided to buy external CD drive at Ebay and I installed the latest version of gOS to my cloudbook.
The latest gOS didn't work with cloudbook very well, so I was seeking another way to get it back to original status and then I found this site and "anonymous" was suggesting install gOS for Sylvanian.
It went very well....except wifi.
I cannot activate wifi even though I pushed the wifi button over and over.
I don't know what to do now.
What Evelex tech suggested me was installing gOS from official gOS website, but it's 1GB. Do I have to buy external DVD drive now? No way...why do I have to invest more to this junk.
Do someone know where I can download wifi drive for cloudbook or any other solution for this???
Is there any way to downsize iso file to less than 700MB so that I can burn it to CD-ROM?

well, it's not exactly "internet based". it has applications that have counterparts that exist on the net, but all of the applications and data are stored locally on your computer. then when you connect to the internet, they sink with their counterparts on the net.
at least that's the way i understand it..
